Large Antique Irish Sterling Silver Mether 'Mead' Cup 1899 Wine Cooler

An impressive Antique Irish Silver Vase or cooler in the shape of a traditional Irish silver Mether mead drinking cup. The Mether Cup has a rounded square form with a handle on each side. The Cup has a small crest engraved on the side.
Inspired by the design of communal drinking vessels as far back as the 10th century, these square Mether Cups have been made in a wide range of materials from wood and pottery to these later designs in sterling silver.
This example is of substantial size and is large enough to be used as a trophy, a vase or a wine and champagne cooler.
Made in Dublin, Ireland in 1899.
