Antique Victorian Serling Silver Cellini Jug on Stand Ewer on Plate London 1864

An excellent example of a classic Antique Victorian Silver Jug in the traditional 'Cellini' style standing on a matching Silver Platter embellished in the same Cellini Style. Inspired by the work of 16th century artist, sculptor and metal worker Benvenuto Cellini these Silver Jugs have become a recognisable design icon in their own rights.
This beautiful Victorian Jug has an ornate chased design on its entire exterior surface including a series of cartouches with with classical and mythical faces surrounded by stylised scroll and foliate designs. The Jug also has images of birds and animals interspersed between the other chased imagery. The scroll handle has a figural thumbpiece and the lid has complementary chasing. The interior is gilded. The Stand is embellished with the same classical faces on the bored and has a raised central finial to secure the jug in place.
Made in London, England in 1864 by Smith, Nicholson & Co.
