Antique Irish Georgian Silver Two Handled Loving Cup Dublin, Ireland c 1775
c. 1775
A magnificent Antique George III Irish Silver Two Handled Loving Cup in a traditional design with two impressive acanthus leaf topped scroll handles and standing on a spread pedestal foot. The Body of the Cup has a silver band around the middle above which is an ornate armorial engraved on one side and a smaller engraved crest on the other. The Cup has a lovely patina commensurate with age and use.
Traditionally made as drinking vessels, these cups have two handles allowing them to be passed from one guest to the next. These cups have a long history, with stories of two handled cups dating back to King Edward the Martyr in the late 900s. While this specific claim can be questioned, these cups have a long and varied history symbolising love, trust and friendship.
