Large Antique Victorian Silver Jug London 1862 Hot Water, Beer, Water, Cocktails
1862
This exceptional Victorian Sterling Silver Jug is richly embossed with an intricate diamond point design, each lozenge centred with a raised floral quatrefoil motif. The decoration reflects the influence of the Gothic and Renaissance Revival movements, which celebrated the geometric ornament and finely textured surfaces of medieval and Renaissance metalwork. This highly decorative style would later become synonymous with the luxury silver known as the Abercrombie style in the Victorian era. The Jug has a classic Baluster shape and a diamond shaped cartouche opposite the handle and stands on a spread pedestal foot. The Silver Jug has a pair of insulators in the handle making it suitable for hot liquids. The style is reminiscent of Georgian Bee Jugs and it is of a size and shape to be suited for water at the dinner table or cocktails in the summer.
