An elegant late 19th-century claret jug, combining refined silverwork with beautifully engraved glass, exemplifying the craftsmanship and taste of the Victorian period.
The ovoid glass body is finely etched with an intricate arrangement of trailing vines, leaves, and stylised floral motifs, arranged within decorative cartouches and bordered by delicate beading. This engraving on the body of the Claret Jug is notably fine. The upper mount, spout, and hinged Lid and Handle are crafted in Sterling Silver. The Neck of the Mount features a chased design of floral swags which are mirrored on the hinged lid.
Made in Sheffield in 1878 by W & G Sissons
Height – 28.9cm
Diameter of Base – 9.5cm
This Claret Jug has a Full English Hallmark on the Silver Mount, and below the foot. It is part marked on the hinged lid.
This Claret Jug is in excellent condition with no damage.
