circa 1890
A magnificent antique Austrian comport with a carved Rock Crystal Bowl mounted in elegant silver gilt and embellished with impressive enamelled creatures. The bowl itself is carved from natural rock crystal and has delicate inclusions creating a beautiful hue. The bowl is further embellished with a stylised carved leaf pattern. The bowl has a delicate silver gilt band on the upper rim and rests on an ornate hexagonal gilt and rock crystal spread foot, in turn standing on 6 ball and claw feet.
The bowl is topped with a pair of superb silver gilt and enamelled creatures, each clutching a squirming serpent in its claws. These creatures are in the style of the beasts found on the pages of medieval illuminated manuscripts and look like mythical dragons. Each dragon is covered in rich jewel tones enamel.
